A Brief History of Brentwood
Long before Brentwood appeared on any map, Native peoples lived in the valleys and hills surrounding Mount Diablo for thousands of years. The rock art preserved in the nearby Vasco Caves remains a powerful reminder of that deep history.
In 1837, physician and pioneer John Marsh purchased Rancho Los Meganos, a sprawling land grant at the eastern base of Mount Diablo. Marsh became one of the first American settlers in the region, and his letters back East encouraged many families to make the overland journey to California. In 1856, he completed an impressive stone house on his land, though he was killed later that same year.
The town itself took shape after the railroad arrived in 1878. The community was named after Brentwood in Essex, England, the ancestral home of the Marsh family. Rail access connected local growers to larger markets, and fields of grain soon stretched across the valley.
Agriculture changed dramatically in the early 1900s. Balfour, Guthrie and Company acquired large tracts of land and invested heavily in irrigation, and the East Contra Costa Irrigation District formed in 1914. Water turned dry grain fields into productive orchards of apricots, peaches, cherries, and walnuts. The company’s name lives on today in Balfour Road, home to our practice. Brentwood incorporated as a city in 1948 and remained a quiet farming town for decades before new neighborhoods, schools, and businesses brought rapid growth beginning in the 1990s.
